According to the expansion of functions of the Lumbini Province Government, the Ministry was initially established on 2078/01/06 (B.S.) as the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development with the objective of formulating, implementing, studying, researching, monitoring and managing projects within its jurisdiction, such as drinking water and sanitation, housing, buildings and urban development, as well as infrastructure construction and administrative tasks. On 2078/05/18, the Ministry’s name was amended to the Ministry of Tourism, Rural and Urban Development. Subsequently, according to the decision of the Provincial Government (Council of Ministers) on 2079/10/27, the name and functions were revised in accordance with the Provincial Government (Work Division Regulations), 2079, and it was renamed the Ministry of Water Supply, Rural and Urban Development. Later, as per the decision of the Lumbini Province Government (Council of Ministers) on 2080/09/06, it was renamed the Ministry of Urban Development, and currently, according to the decision of the Lumbini Province Government (Council of Ministers) on 2081/01/12, it is known as the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply.
